I certainly hope we are able to put on another fair this year! I plan to enter the beaded ballgown I made for Rebecca in the large stitchery, and I would also love to enter crafts, flower arrangements, and talent with a song or a piece on the piano.
I don't know about livestock, poor Sunshine was a sleep through the whole contest last year. What is your opinion on the custom of Calling Hour?
Sincerely, Samantha E. Parkington

Curing people has become easier now that I know more about it, but there is still a lot to learn, of course! Not much news to give about the rancho... and no new recipes either. I'm sure things will pick up soon, with the possibility of a county Fair on the horizon. Do you think it will come about this year? If you think it will, what categories would you be most likely to enter? I'm going to try and finish my new ball gown in time for the stitchery contest!

Does Kaya use her own remedies the same way that you use yours? With the same herbs and things? I've often wondered about Kaya - what she eats, what she does, how she spends her days... don't you?
I am listening to Suzanne downstairs in our kitchen preparing the feast for the Masked Ball. She is clanking and thumping around and occasionally breaking into shrill song to help the food taste better. It is all very nice, but I'm starting to get a headache.

I think that the hardest cure I had to do this winter was the cuts and bites that Anders Larson got from the bear attack on Christmas day. I'm sorry that I couldn't make it to your Valentine's party, I had several patients to attend to. How did it go? Was it very odd without the fashionable trio?

I believe that Laura won the tennis match against Lisa. Although there never was a clear end to the match...
I know, everyone was so sick this winter you must have been so busy! What was the hardest cure you had to do this year?
I am happily working on a new dress in the clean music room, which seems so large after we took all of the trees out of it a few weeks ago. We are going to start decorating for Valentine's day today; I can't wait! It is so much fun to decorate.

I can't think of why Laura and Lisa would be using saucepans as tennis rackets unless they could not find the usual tennis rackets. Who wonthe match? I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off this holiday season with all of the people needing to be cured! How was your Navidad? Mine was very enjoyable and fun! We are all happy up here because the temperature has finally warmed up and the snow has started to melt. How are you?

I am doing well although very tired after wallpapering the music room all day yesterday. It was rather exhausting having to crane my neck and bend my back into awkward positions pasting it all up, but I have finally finished, and spent the rest of my energy moving all furniture back into its' proper places.
Right now, I am enjoying a quiet morning in the parlor and observing a rather dandy tennis match between Laura Windmill and Lisa at the bank. They are using saucepans rather than rackets, which I find slightly confusing.
How are you?

I'm afraid that if I stayed the night on my journeys I would not make it to Chihuahua on time. (A city halfway in between Pleasantville and Mexico City.) If I do not make it on time I have to sleep in the open. Tea with you two would be delightful! When would it be?
We just finished doing the laundry which you'll be happy to hear, and we are just about to deliver it. Clara just made some cinnamon rolls, mmmm.... well, I have to go and weave a bit!

My dear Josefina,
It sounds like you have been keeping quite busy lately with all of your chores and remedies and duties around your rancho.
I'm glad the girls were pleased with their exam results - everyone did so well; I was always exceedingly proud of everyone.
The library is taking a while to grow - we have a very small selection of books right now and no free time to devote to writing or collecting more. I hope to resume work on the library fairly soon however, of course. Lara Larson and Clara Montoya have both already checked out several titles for their own personal use and returned them and now the shelves are full again.
You should come and visit the library yourself sometime and see if there are any titles that are particularly interesting to you.
Actually, if you were interested in writing a book yourself, I'm sure I would be more than happy to include it on our shelves. You could write about teas or remedies! What a jolly idea!
Sincerely, Samantha Parkington

I am very embarrassed to inform you that I have not finished my napkins yet! Unfortunately I have not had very much time lately with catching up on all my responsibilities.
I just had Kirsten and Cristal over for cures, and I am now determined to finish my studies with my Aunt as soon as possible.
How is the library? Have you gotten much business? Is Lisa good at the bank job?
I am planning on working on my remedies a lot this Summer, what have you been doing? Heather and Rebecca are very happy that the exams are over and Heather is especially happy about the placements. I hope to see you at sewing circle!

My Dear Samantha,
When does your art instructor arrive? I am sort of angry right now because Mama coaxed me into letting Rebecca use my weaving loom which I did not want. Francisca is making some spicy pumpkin stew and it smells delicious! Have you ever tried it? You should! Congratulations on winning the garden contest! Rebecca was very happy that she got 4th! She still talks about it! Well I really should go write to my Tia Magdalena, adios!

My dear Josefina,
I have just recently decided to start taking art lessons again, since I've nearly forgotten everything that Mrs. Millman taught us so long ago. I've scheduled some home lessons with a French instructor from New York, whose portfolio and credentials were rather impressive. He is an excellent portrait artist! Oh yes, your prayer room is really quite beautiful. Well, the bell is ringing for dinner!
April 7th, 2006
I really like pumpkin empanadas and my favorite place in the house is my healing cupboard where there are all sorts of spicy smells! Oh no! Juan is trying to light all the fires but he doesn't know how to strike a match. I am planning on going to collect some ragwort today and I was going to see if dandelions would taste good as a tea flavor and when you add peppermint to the tea it actually tastes really good!
Are you doing anything special for Easter? I started to teach Heather how to weave on an extra loom that we have and she is very good! Well I should go collect some ragwort!

Your Mama sounds very talented indeed, you are very lucky to have her to teach you so many different life skills.
Why, she has told you how to play piano, how to knit, sew, cook, weave and heal the whole town! What else could you need? Besides perhaps singing or dancing.
What is your favorite recipe, and where is your favorite place in the house? I adore Mousse au Chocolate and asparagus, and my favorite place is definitely the purple lounge in the parlour, where I lie for countless hours everyday, either reading or sewing or looking out at the beautiful grounds before setting out on a stroll. Did I tell you that Hawkins is growing a small hedge maze? What fun!
March 6th, 2006
Mama taught me the piano when I was very little - you probably haven't seen our piano because it's in the prayer room all the time, and the door is usually shut.
I don't do sewing very much but Mama wants me to do more now that I am the age of 15 and almost 16 in March. Thank you for inviting me to the Valentine party! It was lots of fun! Are you looking forward to the festival? I certainly am! How was the sewing circle with the Wickons? Was there enough room for everyone to fit? Haha! Well I should go and help Francisca with lunch.
February 1st, 2006
My dear Josefina,
How did you learn to play the piano? I didn't know that your family had a piano! Did you get it recently?
We are all just working hard to clean up after our Valentine's day party, which was so much fun! You were so funny when you were trying to get all of us to smile during one of the games. I nearly burst my buttons watching you!
Do you do much sewing? I am going to start sewing Teresa and Elizabeth some clothes soon. Since the new fashions came out, we discovered that Teresa only has one or two suitable party dresses, which will never do for this year's party season because a proper lady must never be seen wearing the same thing twice (especially at parties and balls!)
Did you know that someone entirely ripped apart our door bouquet at the party? Wasn't that rude? Anyway, write back soon!
February 3rd, 2006
Yes I do still sing and NO I do not study with Suzanne, I prefer to teach myself. Si, I do play the piano! And I got 3rd place at the piano concerto competition! My favorite piece is Home Sweet Home. It is a very nice day today! I probably will go and pick some herbs today. What activities do you like to do during the day? I mostly do my chores, cook, and gather herbs to dry. I hope you are better after all of your recent illnesses. Well I hope you have a wonderful day! I should go pick some herbs now!
January 15th, 2006
My dear Josefina,
It sounds like your Christmas was quite beautiful! As for us, we didn't have a very eventful Christmas.... we just woke up and opened our presents after a beautiful Christmas service in downtown Pleasantville. We lit candles and everything!
Right now I am listening to Teresa's singing lesson with Mrs. Wickon. It seems to be going well! They are doing their scales and arpeggios now. Didn't you used to sing? Did you study with Suzanne? She has quite a good voice, actually. Elizabeth decided to learn violin after she got one from Santa Clause and she has been practicing ever since! We're going to sign Teresa up for a good piano teacher as well when we can find one. We were thinking that Nan might be a good one to pick. Do you play the piano? What is your favorite piece?

Hola from New Mexico! How was your Christmas? Mine was lovely! The three kings came and put chocolate and dried fruits and cones of brown sugar and other sweets in our shoes on Christmas eve! The candies were delicious! I also got a fancy new dress from New Mexico and other very beautiful clothes from Mama and Papa and some chickens from Santa Clause!
Then we all got our fanciest dresses on and took family photos. Then after we took pictures we all got ready for the priest who was coming that night. The priest came and we had a Christmas service, then afterwards we at the yummy dinner that Francisca had made. How was your Christmas?

My dear Josefina,
I am so sorry for my lengthy absence from my writing desk! I have been so swept up in the parties of the season and preparing for them that I've hardly had time to set pen to paper!
Last night was Mrs. Wickon's masked ball, which was really lovely! I won first place on my costume and mask, which I worked practically all day on! I was very happy.
I don't know quite what happened, Josefina, but of course I would love to continue being penpals! We live so far away that it's very exotic to hear about your different lifestyle.
I am not sure when Proper school will begin, I'm working on a plan for Teresa's education at the moment, and that is the most important thing right now. But I'm always available for private tutoring if your sisters need help. Write soon!
Love, Samantha Parkington

What happened? We haven't written to each other for ages! Do you still want to be penpals? I am really excited about being the star in the next movie! It'll be so fun! Are you in the movie? When is Proper School going to start again? Everyone in this house has completely lost their manners!
Well, xoxoxo! Love, Josefina Montoya

I don't know why we stopped writing to each other! Wasn't camp fun? Do you like my stationary? I got it from Clara I think for Christmas. What's going on over there? Over here we're very worried because Clara has a temperature of 105.7! Isn't that horrible? Right now I just did ballet class and now I'm waiting for Rebecca to be done and watching the yellow sunset!
